Gold ETF Holdings Just Hit A 12-Month High. Price Fell $500.

For most of the past year, gold ETF holdings and gold's price moved together. That's the normal relationship.

Then in late August, they split apart completely.

Price fell from around $4,650 an ounce down to $4,157. In that exact same window, ETF holdings kept climbing, reaching roughly 100.9 million ounces, matching their highest level of the entire past year.

I think that's the real story here, more than the headline price drop itself.

US-listed gold ETFs pulled in $3.8 billion in September alone, following $7.9 billion in August. That's not quiet, hesitant buying. That's sustained, heavy accumulation happening while price was actively falling.

Falling price, rising holdings, usually means one thing: buyers are treating the dip as an entry point, not a warning sign. One fund manager put it simply, when prices fall and investors keep buying, conviction is still intact.

There's a real complication underneath that read though.

A separate analysis flagged that roughly 298 tonnes of existing ETF gold, around $38 billion worth, is sitting underwater at current prices. That's a genuine overhang, holders with an incentive to sell the moment price recovers enough to get them back to even, not necessarily to profit.

So two forces are layered on top of each other here. Fresh money buying the dip with real conviction. Older money potentially waiting to exit the second it can. Both are true at the same time, and I don't think either one cancels the other out.

Not predicting which side wins from here. Just noting a 12-month high in holdings happening during one of gold's worst monthly price drops since June is a genuinely rare combination, and I think it deserves more attention than it's getting right now.
