FutureBit is testing HashFly, a browser-based demonstration that uses simulated activity across 2,914 fruit fly neural pathways to perform SHA-256 mining calculations. According to NS3.AI, FutureBit said a hypothetical system using living neurons could reach about 1 watt per terahash, but the current experiment runs on conventional hardware and cannot compete with Bitcoin miners. A separate project, FlyMiner, uses a digital map of 139,255 fruit fly neurons to control a standard mining program.
