🔐 Binance says your balance is covered. You can now verify it yourself.
On November 2, Binance completed its zero-knowledge proof of reserves for a snapshot of its accounts taken on October 31, two days after more than $6.3 billion was stolen on October 29.
📌 What’s covered: 10 tokens, including
$BTC , ETH,
$BNB , SOL, XRP, USDT, and USDC. The snapshot was taken on October 31 at 00:00 UTC. A new snapshot with more tokens is planned for November 4.
🧩 How it works, in plain English:
• The Merkle tree: a fingerprint of all accounts. It shows you that YOUR account was included.
• The zk-SNARK proof: a mathematical calculation that proves reserves cover at least 1-to-1 what’s owed to customers, without revealing anyone’s balance.
• To verify: log in, download the open-source verification tool, and run it on your computer.
⚠️ The limitations:
• It’s a snapshot at one point in time, not a guarantee for tomorrow
• Only 10 tokens are covered for now
• Binance says it covered about 95% of the losses, with the rest in less liquid tokens
📱 Moussa, a phone seller in Conakry, keeps some USDT on Binance. His tips:
1. Verify only through the official app or website
2. No one needs your secret phrase or password to “verify” your balance
3. A link received by SMS or WhatsApp to “check your funds” is a scam
