$IOST I’ve seen this play before—in September.

Here’s how it went then: it closed at 0.000606 on 9/4. Five days later, on 9/9, it hit a high of 0.002448—four times higher. The next day, it closed at 0.001017, giving back 46% in a single day. Then it took more than a month to slowly grind back to 0.00074.

And this week, the show started again. On 10/19, IOST spot trading on Binance did only about $100,000 in volume all day—so quiet nobody was paying attention. Volume started picking up around 6 p.m. on 10/20, and by 11 a.m. today, it had surged to 0.00125, with about $4.12 million traded in that one hour alone. At noon, a long lower wick plunged to 0.000991, a little over 20% below the high. It’s now hovering around 0.00106, still up 41% over 24 hours.

After looking around, I could find only one relevant announcement: IOST’s official X account posted in the evening on 10/19 that a mandatory v4.0.0 mainnet upgrade was underway, asking exchanges and nodes to update. That’s a maintenance notice, not a change in demand; Binance’s announcements page hasn’t had anything about IOST in recent days either. I don’t think a version upgrade alone could drive trading volume from $100,000 to tens of millions. My read is that funds have singled out an obscure small-cap coin. The barrage of “keep an eye on IOST” posts on X is also a familiar feature of this kind of market move.

So I’m leaning bearish this time. There’s no new fundamental catalyst, and the last move followed almost exactly the same pattern before giving back most of its gains. On the USDT-margined contracts, the funding rate was +0.005% at several settlements over the past day; now the estimated rate has flipped to around -0.017%. Some traders are already betting the other way on the contracts.

Those who chased the high on 9/9 have seen the price recover to only half of that peak by today. Whether this move can end differently depends on whether anything substantial comes along to support it. So far, I haven’t seen anything.

😅 $IOST nearly doubled from yesterday morning to the early hours of today, but I combed through the official account and couldn’t find a single piece of bullish news. Then at 7 a.m. this morning, it dropped 29% in one hour.
