Bitcoin cleared $86,000 on Sept 21 for the first time since January, and most coverage focused on the price. The more useful number that day was $82,225, the average cost basis of US spot ETF holders. Those holders got back to breakeven for the first time in eight months. The move wasn't patient spot buying. About $750M of shorts were liquidated as $82,000 gave way, per CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk. Forced buyers did the lifting. Twenty-five days later, $BTC is back near that cost-basis line. It stalled twice below $87,400, then dipped to about $80,000 on Oct 14–15 after hot inflation data before bouncing toward $82,300. ETFs sold into the weakness: $484.9M out on Oct 7, the biggest day since June 25, and another $261M on Oct 14. I had been treating $86K as the breakout. Holders who just returned to breakeven may behave more like sellers than believers, which makes $82K a contested line rather than a floor. On BTCUSDT, the $80,000 low is the print to keep in mind. Whether cost-basis holders stay or leave on the next bounce is still unanswered. The Sept 21 reclaim of $86,000 has been rejected twice below $87,400. BTC dipped to about $80,000 on Oct 14–15 after hot CPI and PPI prints and is back near $82,300. Caution: ETFs pulled $484.9M on Oct 7 and $261M on Oct 14. The $82,225 ETF cost basis, reclaimed Sept 21, is now being retested from below. Support: buyers defended $80,000, which lines up with the 50-day average near $80,300. View: watch, no directional call. This is a $80,000–$87,400 range, not a confirmed breakout. Levels: A daily close back above $82,225 targets $86,000, then $87,400. A daily close above $87,000 would be the first sign of a break. A daily close below $80,000 points to the 50-week average, near $78,000. Timeframe: the next few daily closes. Another hot inflation print can break $80,000 regardless of ETF flows. The range thesis is invalid on a daily close below $80,000. $BTC
