So that same year in October, after he was arrested in the United States, he admitted that he had spent about $600,000 and managed to obtain German citizenship in just over a year. He said he forged himself as a descendant of someone whose German nationality had been stripped during the Nazi period. This lead was also shared with German police.

In the end, this gray, fast-track path to German citizenship was finally uncovered.
