In a recent press release, Binance announced the appointment of Eleanor Hughes as its new General Counsel. Effective immediately, Hughes will oversee Binance’s global legal affairs, working alongside a team of 85 legal experts. This appointment reflects the company’s commitment to responsible growth in the rapidly evolving Web3 industry while collaborating closely with regulators and policymakers worldwide.

Eleanor Hughes is no stranger to Binance, having been with the company for nearly two years. During her tenure, she has earned the trust of Binance’s founder and CEO, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), and the rest of the team as a trusted legal advisor. With her extensive legal experience, industry knowledge, integrity, and strong work ethic, Hughes has become an invaluable asset to the company.

CZ expressed his confidence in Hughes and her ability to lead the industry-leading legal team at Binance. He emphasized the team’s mission to prioritize user protection and risk management on the platform. Under Hughes’ guidance, the legal team will continue to flourish, further solidifying Binance’s commitment to regulatory compliance and user safety.

In her own words, Hughes recognizes the transformative period the digital asset industry is currently experiencing. As mainstream adoption continues to accelerate, the industry is maturing and becoming more regulated. Hughes expressed her excitement about leading the accomplished legal team at Binance during this pivotal time. She acknowledges the shared responsibility with regulators to protect consumers while fostering an environment for technological growth and innovation. Collaboration with regulators worldwide will be a key aspect of her role in achieving this vision.

Hughes joined Binance’s legal team in November 2021 and quickly rose to the position of Head of Legal for APAC and MENA regions. In this role, she oversaw legal matters in these regions and managed a team of specialized lawyers focusing on regulatory affairs, M&A, commercial law, and litigation. Hughes played a significant role in obtaining virtual asset service provider licenses and registrations for Binance in various jurisdictions, including Bahrain, Dubai, and New Zealand.

With 15 years of legal experience in private practice and in-house roles, Eleanor Hughes brings a wealth of expertise to her position. Prior to joining Binance, she spent over a decade working at prestigious US law firms such as Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, and Affiliates. Her areas of focus included litigation and contentious matters.

Binance’s appointment of Eleanor Hughes as General Counsel signals the company’s dedication to navigating the ever-changing regulatory landscape while maintaining a commitment to user protection and responsible growth. With her leadership and the support of a talented legal team, Binance is poised to shape the future of the Web3 industry while fostering cooperation with regulators worldwide.
