SOLANA has officially reduced the target slot time from 300 ms to 250 ms, increasing block production frequency by 17%. This upgrade became effective on September 18 under SIMD-0525. ([Solana][1])
However, this change does not mean a 17% increase in transactions per second. Each slot now contains fewer accounts and less data, so the total processing capacity remains roughly the same.
🔥 Why traders should care:
• Faster on-chain data updates
• Validators can no longer control blocks for two seconds; it’s now only one second
• Promise (epoch/commitment) durations drop from about 36 hours to around 30 hours
• Faster response times may benefit DeFi data providers/Oracles and automated trading systems.
Solana still has other changes coming.
🎯 The next target is 200 ms. There are no activation dates yet on the mainnet. Validator skipping rates will be monitored first.
