I’ve only recently realized that I had a major blind spot in my thinking. For a long time, I was stuck in the scarcity mindset of focusing solely on honing my technical skills, always assuming that if I was good enough at what I did, opportunities would come to me.

The limitations are clear: technical skills are your ticket in, but they’re not a force multiplier. The scarcity mindset puts almost all its time into improving one skill at a time, relying on individual expertise and trading hours for money. It treats networking as small talk, and going to events or meeting people as a waste of time that could be spent coding or doing research. When it encounters people who are more accomplished, it either avoids them or just admires them from afar, rarely thinking about how to build a value network that compounds over time.

The abundance mindset doesn’t mean you stop learning technology. It means treating technology as your foundation while also investing time in building a network, connecting with resources, and staying on top of industry trends. Your technical skills determine how difficult a problem you can solve; your network determines the scale of the platform, capital, and collaboration opportunities you can access. Many projects, partnerships, and valuable insights don’t come from sitting at a computer refreshing docs—they emerge from meeting in person and having meaningful conversations.
