A new governance proposal from SVRN CEO Sal Ternullo could reduce NEAR’s annual issuance from 2.5% to 1.6% over 24 months, with a longer-term goal of moving toward a fixed supply.
If approved, that would mean fewer new $NEAR entering circulation over time — potentially an important change for NEAR’s token economics.
But there’s another story happening at the same time.
NEAR Intents recently suffered a ~$3.8M exploit. The team says the issue was related to the interaction between Omni’s infrastructure and the NEAR Intents smart contract, not a vulnerability in the NEAR Protocol itself or the native NEAR token. The core network continued producing blocks and processing transactions normally.
So right now, NEAR has two very different narratives:
📉 Short term: security incident has clearly created market pressure.
📈 Long term: lower issuance + a potential move toward fixed supply could make NEAR’s tokenomics more interesting if the proposal passes.
The big question now is whether NEAR can turn the current pressure into a stronger foundation for the next phase.
