This is not selfish indulgence, but a lesson in self-settling that we need to cultivate amid a noisy era. The Path of Cultivation The ancients had long understood the way of self-love. As the Dao De Jing says: “Therefore the sage knows himself but does not show himself; he loves himself but does not exalt himself.” True self-love is not ostentatious display, nor relying on oneself to look down on others, but a clear awareness of oneself and a gentle kindness toward one’s own heart. In the present day, we are constantly burdened by the expectations of the outside world: society urges us to strive, family hopes we will take responsibility, and in social interactions we must consider others’ feelings. Open the internet, and everywhere are others’ glamorous and smooth-sailing lives, making it easy to fall into comparison and self-doubt.
