Wu Shuo learned that BitConnect’s former promoter, Trevon James, said that the U.S. SEC is seeking a court order requiring him to return approximately $2.3387 million in alleged “ill-gotten gains,” and to pay about $0.9393 million in pre-judgment interest, for a total of approximately $3.2780 million. Court documents show that the SEC’s expert traced, through on-chain transaction tracking, the Bitcoin Trevon James received from BitConnect between April 2017 and January 2018. Trevon James said that 111 BTC among the relevant assets were later stolen by hackers, but the SEC’s clawback calculations were not reduced as a result. The SEC sued Trevon James and other BitConnect promoters starting in 2021, alleging that they participated in promoting an unregistered securities offering with a scale exceeding $2 billion.
