🚨 A crypto professional’s home was raided and the stolen digits shouldn’t be just €40,000 🏠

In Vendin-le-Vieil, in northern France, a father working in the cryptocurrency industry, along with his wife and two children aged eight and twelve, were tied up at home. Four intruders broke into the residence in Pas-de-Calais, forced him to hand over the access keys, and then took away about €40,000 worth of crypto assets. The family was trapped for more than three hours.

First layer: this isn’t an isolated case. Official figures from the French gendarmerie show that, as of this July, there have already been 77 cases nationwide involving kidnappings and detentions related to crypto. Seventy-seven isn’t just a coincidence at month’s end—it’s a curve that’s rising. And the victims are often not big players; they’re ordinary people who swap their wages and savings into coins. Their addresses are hidden on the chain, but the people stand right at the door.⚖️

Second layer: the method is changing too. The perpetrators no longer just fish remotely—they come straight to the doorstep. The father was beaten, and the daughter’s face was struck with car keys, until around 8 a.m. when the father managed to contact emergency services, alerting the intruders. All four then drove away. Police have not yet released their identities or vehicle details, and they haven’t said whether the assets were recovered. Personal safety is becoming a second line of defense beyond private keys.

Of course, some people say this is just an individual case with nothing to do with the broader market. That argument has some merit—€40,000 is indeed too small to move the market, and you shouldn’t use a single case to frighten everyone. But the real issue isn’t the amount. It’s that the risk has moved from the screen to the front door. When crypto assets become large enough to be seen, the holders shift from anonymous addresses to walkable targets.

What’s really worth watching isn’t how much this family lost, but whether the basic safety know-how has kept up when on-chain wealth moves into the real world. One camp says that with self-custody, you’re responsible yourself; the other says the industry should provide protective solutions. Which side are you on?👀
