A lot of distress has been caused by the vulnerability exploited in #Coldcard . The expert @anibalcripto has written an instructive article about self-custody. One sentence from the article is chilling:
"For 15 years, the security of much of the open-source code rested on an assumption that nobody ever said out loud: reviewing millions of lines to look for a subtle bug takes so much human time that almost nobody will do it. That assumption is no longer true. When auditing 5 years of a repository’s history stops costing months of a specialist and instead costs hours of compute time, the phrase "the code is available for anyone to audit" changes its meaning. Anyone includes the person who wants to steal from you".
People who choose the path of retiring while accumulating $BTC need to understand the tools that are used, follow new developments, and delve into topics that many may find esoteric: entropy of a seed phrase, entropy of a passphrase, secure backups, hardware wallet design, multisig configurations, firmware verification, supply-chain risks, and inheritance planning if you were to die suddenly.
