Still short on storage?
Hereโs todayโs pullback leaderboard for the storage semiconductor sector: XL South NVIDIA Hynix -70%, XL South Samsung -65%, Kioxia -44%, Bairui Storage -40%, SK Hynix -39%, Micron -28%โฆ
A year ago, the market was still talking about โAI compute driving HBM demand, and a storage shortage lasting until 2025.โ One year later, inventory has reversed, capital expenditures are excessive, and the stock price has already killed the narrative first. This script is identical in crypto:
- At the narrative peak, everyone asks โIs there still a shortage of XX?โโshortage of compute, shortage of bandwidth, shortage of collateral, shortage of meme liquidity
- The price peak often comes 6โ12 months earlier than the fundamentals peak
- When the news is still talking about scarcity, smart money has already started cashing out
- By the time the market realizes โitโs not short anymore,โ the drawdown leaderboard already looks like this
Storage and crypto may seem unrelated, but **cycle patterns are universal**:
- The strong ones (Hynix, Samsung) can still get cut in half, and then cut again
- Leveraged ETFs (XL South) amplify directional exposureโwhen they fall, theyโre harsher than spot, just like crypto perpetual futures
- The grander the narrative, the more brutal the mean reversion
Donโt use the chart to shortโitโs a reminder to yourself: even the best story, you still have to look at price and position size.
