THE PENTAGON MAY BE ABOUT TO BET $5 BILLION ON AI INFRASTRUCTURE
The U.S. Department of Defense is reportedly negotiating a loan of around $5B for Fluidstack, an AI cloud startup, to help finance AI infrastructure.
The funding is expected to come from the Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) of the U.S. Department of Defense, an agency specialized in providing capital to businesses operating in fields that are strategically significant for national security.
If the deal goes through, it would be the largest loan made by OSC to date.
My take: this is no longer just a story about an AI startup needing capital. AI infrastructure is increasingly being treated by Washington as strategic infrastructure, similar to chips, energy, and defense.
$5B for an AI cloud startup sounds crazy, but if AI is considered part of national capability, then the logic behind it is completely different.
The Pentagon funding AI clouds. The AI arms race just got a lot more expensive.
Do you think the U.S. government should directly invest in AI infrastructure, or let the private market decide?
