The prime minister of the Zionist state of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, said his country could turn to blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies to circumvent possible international sanctions, to the dismay of his opponents and the country’s central bank governor. Several candidates seeking to replace Netanyahu in the October 27 elections, as well as the head of the Bank of Israel, were quick to challenge the prime minister’s statement.

A dozen Western countries have announced sanctions targeting products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, in response to attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinians and the increase in settlement construction approved by Netanyahu. Those sanctions could be extended to Israel itself, economists and industry figures said last month.

Chinese national Zheng Zhao faces a money-laundering charge in the US following his extradition from the Netherlands over an alleged cryptocurrency scam involving more than US$36 million. Investigators have identified 174 American victims whose funds allegedly passed through bank accounts in tax havens and digital wallets. The network used investment platforms and fake websites to deceive victims.

The illicit funds initially passed through shell companies in the US, from where they were transferred to bank accounts in offshore jurisdictions. The money was then converted into stablecoin and distributed to digital wallets abroad, specifically in Cambodia. Zhao faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison if convicted of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
