SpaceX (SPCX) went public in June with the biggest IPO in history. Shares ripped higher, valuation briefly blasted past $2.5–2.6 trillion, and Elon became the world’s first trillionaire. Fast forward to now (late July 2026) and the stock has crashed ~50% from its peak, trading well below the $135 IPO price (recent closes around $110–113). Over $1.2 trillion in market cap has been wiped out — basically the size of an entire Tesla.
What’s driving the freefall?
- Classic post-IPO reality check + profit-taking after the hype peak
- Heavy selling pressure ahead of insider/employee lock-up expiries
- Valuation concerns (still extremely expensive relative to current revenue & profitability)
- Broader tech/AI sell-off and higher-rate jitters
- Some execution noise around Starship timelines and capital intensity (especially the AI/xAI side)
Markets hate uncertainty and love taking chips off the table after a parabolic move. Gravity always shows up.
Is there still an eye for hope?
Yes, and it’s not small.
Starlink keeps scaling hard (subscriber growth still ripping, launch cadence on fire). Falcon 9 remains the most reliable workhorse on the planet. Starship is still the only real path to truly cheap, high-volume access to space, the Moon, and Mars. The long-term thesis (multi-planetary species + orbital infrastructure + Starlink dominance) hasn’t been invalidated — it’s just been priced for perfection and is now getting a brutal haircut.
Cathie Wood’s ARK was already buying the dip. Long-term believers see this as classic “IPO hangover” volatility on a company that still owns the most important tech stack in aerospace.
Short-term? More pain is possible with lock-ups and earnings ahead.
Long-term? If Starship and Starlink keep delivering, this dip could look like a gift in a few years.
