His gifts were that some should be apostles, some evangelists,
*A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians (Ephesians 4: 1-7.11-13)*
Brethren: I, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints, for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

And as he sat at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
Celebrant:
As we celebrate the feast of Saint Matthew, the tax collector turned Apostle, let us place our petitions before our merciful God, who is ever ready to listen to and grant our requests.
FOR THE POPE, THE BISHOPS AND THE PRIESTS OF THE CHURCH: that, as shepherds of the people, they may strive to bring straying souls back to God. We pray to the Lord.
FOR OUR CIVIL AND TRADITIONAL LEADERS: that they may use their power to facilitate the realization of the common good and abandon any desire to use their positions for selfish purposes. We pray to the Lord.
FOR CHRISTIANS STRUGGLING TO OVERCOME SINFUL INCLINATIONS: that, through the intercession of Saint Matthew, they may receive the grace to be able to break loose from those evil deeds that hold them captive. We pray to the lord.
FOR OUR WORSHIPPING COMMUNITY: that we may hear Jesus’ call to discipleship and, like Saint Matthew, contribute to the growth of God’s kingdom on earth. We pray to the Lord.
FOR OTHER INTENTIONS: (the sick, church projects or other activities).
FOR THE DEAD, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF OUR PARISH COMMUNITY AND FAMILY MEMBERS: that they may find eternal rest with the Lord. We pray to the Lord.

TODAY’S REFLECTION
When the world looked at Matthew, the tax collector, they saw a public sinner but when Christ looked at Matthew, he saw a restless heart, longing for God. And at the words, “Follow me”, Matthew got up, left all, and followed Jesus. No one is ever too lost to be saved by God’s amazing grace. Like Matthew, we too can begin anew but we must let go of all that enslaves us and follow Jesus with all our heart. In the words of Cardinal Henry Newman, “to live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often.” Jesus, I trust in you.
PERSONAL DEVOTIONAL
There is no other god like you, O Lord; you forgive the sins of your people who have survived. You do not stay angry forever, but you take pleasure in sowing us your constant love. You will be merciful to us once again. You will show your faithfulness and constant love to your people, as you promised our ancestors long ago. Micah 7:18ff
Let us Pray: Teach us, good Lord, to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labour and not ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do your will. Amen.
BLESSING FOR THE NEW WEEK
Lord God, it is with a heart full of joy and appreciation that we welcome this day and this new week. Thank you for making us see the light of the day. May all glory be to your name.
We will go to work and business, our children will go to school and some of us will travel. We ask you to take care of us and protect us from all evil. Shower your blessings upon us so that this day and the entire week shall be fruitful for us all.
Increase our faith in you at all times, like the centurion, O God, so that we will depend totally on you, and you will see us through our challenges. May the miracle that happened to the Centurion be our lot in this new week. Amen.
I wish you the very best of this new week my beloved friend. Go out today and believe that you will succeed. Put in your best, be kind to people, and you will be joyful at the end of the day.

Brüder: Jemand wird fragen: Wie werden die Toten auferweckt? Mit was für einem Leib kommen sie? Du Narr! Was du säst, wird nicht lebendig, wenn es nicht stirbt. Und was du säst, ist nicht der Leib, der werden soll, sondern ein bloßer Same – vielleicht von Weizen oder von einem anderen Korn. So ist es auch bei der Auferstehung der Toten: Was gesät wird, ist vergänglich; was auferweckt wird, ist unvergänglich. Was gesät wird, ist der Ehre entbehrt; was auferweckt wird, ist in Herrlichkeit auferweckt. Was gesät wird, ist in Schwachheit; was auferweckt wird, ist in Kraft. Es wird ein irdischer Leib gesät; es wird ein geistiger Leib auferweckt. Wenn es einen irdischen Leib gibt, dann gibt es auch einen geistigen Leib; denn so steht geschrieben: Der erste Mensch, Adam, wurde zu einer lebendigen Seele; der letzte Adam wurde zu einem Leben-spendenden Geist. TODAY’S REFLECTION
Jesus looks at his generation and calls it a childish generation. They have become depraved and perverse. They reject that which is sane and good and embrace that which is evil. They call evil good and tag good evil. They spurn God’s love and become obstinate in their rejection of God’s goodness. John came and lived an austere life, they named him a mad eccentric and put his head on a platter of gold. Jesus came, ate, drank and socialized, and they tagged him a drunkard and dragged him to a cross. Our generation seems similar to that of Jesus in its childishness. We complain of lack of time but we waste time gossiping. We pray for the fruit of the womb and also fight for the right to abort. We cry to God for protection and we reject his laws about the use of freedom. The words of Saint Paul should stir us: “When I was a child I spoke like a child and reasoned like a child but now that I am old, I leave my childish ways.” Jesus, I trust in you.
PERSONAL DEVOTIONAL
Listen! I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them and they will eat with me. Revelation 3:20
- Plead for mercy – that God should forgive you in any way you might have sold yourself out or have allowed the enemy to take away your blessings.
- Let heaven trouble every persons or group who have taken what belongs to me in the name of Jesus.
- I release my helper to come to me now, in the name of Jesus Christ.
Let Us Pray:, Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.

TODAY’S REFLECTION
When we take a reverent look at the Pieta we are pulled into a world of pain and agony. We see the agony of a mother who shares the pain of her son; we sense the grief of a mother who was broken because her son was broken. We see the prophecy of Simeon about a piercing sword of sorrow. Mary journeyed through the Paschal Mystery with her son; she drank the chalice of the crucifixion to its bitter end and courageously kept everything in her heart. In Mary, we see how faith is experienced and expressed. With Mary and the Church, our place is at the cross. We live in a world of broken hearts; a world that hungers for mercy and compassion. Our calling is to draw the pain and suffering of the world into God’s compassion. Jesus, I trust in you.

Brüder: Wenn ich das Evangelium verkünde, habe ich keinen Grund zum Rühmen. Denn eine Notwendigkeit liegt auf mir. Weh mir, wenn ich das Evangelium nicht verkünde! Wenn ich es aus eigenem Willen tue, habe ich einen Lohn; wenn aber nicht aus eigenem Willen, dann ist mir eine Sendung anvertraut. Was ist also mein Lohn? Dies: dass ich, indem ich das Evangelium verkünde, das Evangelium unentgeltlich anbiete und dabei nicht das volle Recht ausnutze, das mir das Evangelium gibt. Denn obwohl ich allen gegenüber frei bin, habe ich mich zum Diener aller gemacht, um möglichst viele zu gewinnen. Ich bin allen alles geworden, um auf alle Weise einige zu retten. Ihr verletzt das Gewissen eurer Brüder, und damit sündigt ihr gegen Christus.

Brüder: „Die Erkenntnis bläht auf, die Liebe dagegen baut auf. Wenn jemand meint, er wisse etwas, dann hat er noch nicht so erkannt, wie man erkennen soll. Wer aber Gott liebt, den kennt Gott. Darum geht es beim Essen von Speisen, die Götzen geweiht sind: Wir wissen, dass „ein Götzenbild nichts ist“ und dass „es keinen Gott gibt außer dem einen“. Denn auch wenn es so genannte Götter gibt, im Himmel oder auf der Erde — und tatsächlich gibt es viele „Götter“ und viele „Herren“ — so haben wir doch nur einen Gott: den Vater. Von ihm stammen alle Dinge und wir sind auf ihn hin geschaffen. Und nur einen Herrn: Jesus Christus. Durch ihn sind alle Dinge und wir sind durch ihn geschaffen. Doch nicht alle besitzen diese Erkenntnis. Einige sind noch bis jetzt, weil sie an Götzen gewöhnt waren, so im Denken verhaftet, dass sie Speise als wirklich einem Götzen geweiht essen; und weil ihr Gewissen noch schwach ist, wird es befleckt. So kommt es, dass durch eure Erkenntnis der schwache Christ zugrunde geht, der doch für den Christus gestorben ist. Darum geht es beim Essen von Speisen, die Götzen geweiht sind: Wir wissen, dass „ein Götzenbild nichts ist“ und dass „es keinen Gott gibt außer dem einen“. Denn auch wenn es so genannte Götter gibt, im Himmel oder auf der Erde — und tatsächlich gibt es viele „Götter“ und viele „Herren“ — so haben wir doch nur einen Gott: den Vater. Brüder: Man hört tatsächlich von Unzucht bei euch, und zwar von der Art, die es nicht einmal unter den Heiden gibt: Ein Mann lebt mit der Frau seines Vaters. Und ihr seid aufgeblasen! Hättet ihr nicht vielmehr trauern sollen? Der Täter soll aus eurer Mitte entfernt werden. Denn auch wenn ich leiblich abwesend bin, bin ich doch im Geist bei euch; und ich habe, als wäre ich anwesend, bereits im Namen unseres Herrn Jesus über den schon entschieden, der so etwas getan hat. Wenn ihr versammelt seid und mein Geist bei euch ist, mit der Kraft unseres Herrn Jesus, sollt ihr diesen Mann dem Satan übergeben, damit er zur Vernichtung seines sündigen Wesens geführt werde, sein Geist aber gerettet werde am Tag des Herrn Jesus. Brüder: So soll man uns betrachten: als Diener Christi und als Verwalter der Geheimnisse Gottes. Im Übrigen wird von den Verwaltern verlangt, dass sie sich als zuverlässig erweisen. Doch mir ist es um nichts hinaus, von euch oder von irgendeinem menschlichen Gericht beurteilt zu werden. Ja, ich beurteile mich selbst nicht. Ich bin mir zwar nichts bewusst, aber dadurch bin ich noch nicht gerechtfertigt; der Herr ist es, der gerecht urteilt. Darum urteilt nicht vor der Zeit, bevor der Herr kommt; er wird ans Licht bringen, was jetzt im Dunkeln verborgen ist, und wird die Absichten des Herzens offenbaren. Dann wird jedem der Lobpreis von Gott zuteilwerden.
