Solana began in 2017 with a late-night idea. Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer who had spent over a decade on wireless protocols and distributed systems, wondered why blockchains were so slow. His insight was that nodes wasted enormous effort agreeing not just on transactions, but on time itself. If a network could prove that time had passed without every validator checking with every other one, throughput could jump dramatically.
He described the idea in a whitepaper introducing Proof of History: a cryptographic clock built from a sequential hash function that timestamps events before consensus even begins. Combined with Proof of Stake, it let validators process transactions in parallel instead of waiting in line.
Yakovenko recruited former Qualcomm colleagues Greg Fitzgerald and Stephen Akridge, who turned the concept into working code, first in C and later in Rust. Raj Gokal, with a background in product and finance, joined as co-founder to run operations. The project was originally called Loom, but was renamed to avoid confusion with an existing Ethereum project. The new name came from Solana Beach, a small town north of San Diego where the founders had lived.
Solana Labs launched the mainnet beta in March 2020, while the non-profit Solana Foundation was set up in Switzerland to steward the network. What started as one engineer's frustration with slow block times became one of the most used high-throughput blockchains, known for low fees and fast finality, and for the growing pains of pushing performance to its limits.
