An Ethereum validator going offline is not automatically a slashing event.

Ordinary downtime means missed rewards and penalties. Slashing is different: provable misconduct, such as signing conflicting blocks, destroys part of the validator’s stake and forces it out of the network.

Why it matters: when comparing staking providers, “we keep validators online” does not answer how they prevent conflicting signatures. Availability and protection against slashable mistakes are separate questions.

Pool users are not insulated from these risks. A pool can pass validator penalties or slashing losses through to token holders under its rules.

Before choosing a provider, check both its operational safeguards and who bears losses—not just the advertised yield.
