Wrapped bitcoin on Ethereum is not bitcoin sitting on the Bitcoin network.

Ethereum.org explains that WBTC is an Ethereum token representing bitcoin exposure, rather than native BTC. That distinction matters when choosing a wallet, sending funds or using a lending app: the network and token format must be supported, not just the name “bitcoin.”

Before transferring, check the exact asset and network accepted by the destination. Before using a wrapped asset, understand its backing and how redemption works.

The risk: wrapping and bridging can introduce dependencies beyond the original blockchain, including custody arrangements and smart-contract vulnerabilities. Similar price exposure does not mean identical protections—or an interchangeable deposit address.
