Twenty million Korean cardholders might one day pay with yen stablecoins in Asia's busiest tourist corridor.
Shinhan Card signed an MOU with SBI VC Trade and SBI XDC Network APAC on October 20 in Tokyo (announced Oct 21) to test yen-backed stablecoin payments. The proof-of-concept covers three things: card-linked purchases for Japanese visitors in South Korea, wallet-to-wallet transfers, and cross-border trade settlement — with AML and fraud-detection systems built in.
The context is real: Shinhan Card serves roughly 20 million cardholders and already completed a stablecoin payment proof of concept in April. SBI's own JPYSC — issued with SBI Shinsei Trust Bank and Startale Group in June — had about 20.1 billion yen ($127 million) in circulation as of September 7. More than 10.1 million people crossed between Japan and Korea in the first eight months of 2026.
But this is still just a study. No token named, no timeline, no commercial date — MOUs like this often die quietly.
So: does the Japan–Korea corridor turn stablecoins into actual money, or does this stay a press release? NFA, DYOR.
