FRANCE JUST PUT CRYPTO RISK MANAGEMENT ON THE TAX AGENDA.
38 votes for. 37 against.
One vote separated two very different ways of treating crypto profits.
On October 16, French lawmakers approved an amendment that could make certain crypto-to-stablecoin swaps taxable from January 2027.
Consider a simple trade:
You buy $BTC at $50,000.
You sell at $80,000.
You move into a qualifying stablecoin to protect the gain.
No withdrawal to a bank. No conversion to euros.
Yet under the proposal, the $30,000 realized gain could become taxable immediately.
At the standard 31.4% rate, that's potentially $9,420 — subject to the investor's actual tax circumstances.
This is where the story becomes bigger than taxation.
Moving into stablecoins is often a risk-management decision, not an exit from the crypto market.
Taxing that conversion changes the cost of taking risk OFF the table.
It could influence when traders realize profits, how they rebalance portfolios and which instruments they use.
Supporters argue that converting crypto gains into digital representations of fiat money shouldn't preserve a tax advantage.
Critics question whether the change would create additional friction and shift activity toward other venues.
Both arguments deserve examination.
The amendment is NOT law yet. It targets qualifying e-money tokens under MiCA and must survive the remaining budget process.
But the underlying question is already relevant:
Should reducing market exposure be treated the same as cashing out?
