TechFlow Preview: The Flip proposal recently released on the PancakeSwap governance forum has prompted the market to re-examine CAKE's value capture capabilities.

On the surface, the proposal creates deflationary expectations by cutting 69% of CAKE's daily emission. However, at its core, the detailed fee distribution completely strips the V3 pool's protocol revenue from the token burn mechanism, diverting it entirely to liquidity providers (LPs) and the team treasury. Amid intensifying multi-chain liquidity competition, PancakeSwap has chosen to sacrifice the token's underlying cash flow to defensively secure its market share in the DEX sector.

On October 14, PancakeSwap's core development team (The Kitchen) officially submitted the The Flip tokenomics restructuring proposal on the governance forum.

The key figure in the proposal is the team's plan to drastically reduce CAKE's daily emission from 22,500 tokens to 7,000, representing a cut of up to 69%.

Viewed purely from the supply side, this appears to be a clear positive for the CAKE token. Beneath the facade of "production cuts," however, the proposal fundamentally reconstructs the allocation mechanism for the protocol's real income (trading fees):

First, the trading fee share for liquidity providers (LPs) in V3 and Infinity pools will be increased across the board from the current ~66% to 88%; meanwhile, the remaining 12% in protocol fees will be fully allocated to the Team Treasury.

This means that the V3 business, which serves as the primary transaction volume engine for PancakeSwap today, will no longer direct any trading fees toward repurchasing and burning CAKE. Officials have confirmed that the responsibility for maintaining CAKE's net deflation in the future will fall entirely on the legacy V2 protocol, which still retains its 23% burn mechanism.

In short, the essence of this proposal is that PancakeSwap is allocating all of its most profitable V3 business revenue to market-making capital and the team, while swapping out the dynamic cash flow originally used for secondary market accumulation with the static metric of "reduced new emissions."

Market Share Anxiety and the Red Ocean Battle in DEXs

Severing the empowerment of the token by core business stems from the extremely fierce competitive landscape and liquidity anxiety currently plaguing the DEX sector.

Despite ongoing multi-chain capital fragmentation, PancakeSwap still holds an absolute 76% DEX market share on the BSC chain and maintains a massive transaction volume of approximately $23.8 billion over the past 30 days. However, this foundational base is facing severe challenges from multi-chain aggregators.

Under market mechanisms where aggregators fully dominate trade routing, capital shows no loyalty and will simply flow to the deepest pools with the lowest slippage. If PancakeSwap fails to offer industry-leading yields to retain market-making capital (LPs), large funds will migrate to other networks. A cliff-like drop in market share and transaction volume would be catastrophic for any DEX.

Therefore, ceding 88% of trading fees to LPs is not an proactive ecological expansion by the protocol, but rather a defensive survival strategy forced into a corner. In the choice between "preserving platform market share" and "maintaining direct token value," this proposal has chosen the former.

How to Price CAKE's "New Deflation"?

The implementation of the Flip proposal suggests, to some extent, that in the highly involutionary stock game of DEXs, the so-called "Real Yield" is first and foremost a tool to appease large capital (LPs) to maintain liquidity barriers, and only secondarily profit to empower the token.

For holders, facing this shift in the underlying value capture logic, it is necessary to readjust pricing and holding strategies for CAKE.

The most crucial step first is to abandon the deflationary illusion of "automatic price pumping."

Previously, massive transaction volumes meant substantial fee-driven buybacks, allowing holders to directly reap the dividends of protocol growth. Now, with V3 halting direct burns, the quality of CAKE's deflation has changed. The "scarcity" manufactured solely by restricting new emissions is hard to independently drive long-term price appreciation without real buying capital to absorb it.

Since official deflation hopes now rest on V2, holders must closely track subsequent data changes. If the proposal's implementation leads to massive LP incentives causing transaction volume to accelerate away from V2 toward V3, the actual burn volume of CAKE will face a risk of stalling.

The 12% income retained in the team treasury, along with the 7,000 newly issued daily CAKE flowing into the Pantry Fund, are nominally earmarked for ecosystem development and marketing. Holders need to assess whether the team can leverage these funds to generate ecological increments far exceeding their repurchase value (such as RWA asset integration, cross-chain deployments, etc.). If they fail to deliver above-average growth, this equates to a direct dilution of retail value.

In summary, in the current market, projects that still possess real income must strip away the mystique surrounding the phrase "reducing token supply."

Reducing supply does not equal price appreciation; at times, the token itself is not an interest-bearing asset designed to share protocol profits.
