AI’s $7 Trillion Debt Problem Is Starting to Worry Wall Street ⚠️

The AI boom has a financing problem investors can no longer ignore. S&P Global warned that major technology companies may have more AI-related debt exposure than publicly disclosed, raising fresh questions about how the industry is funding its massive data-center expansion.

Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Oracle, Meta, and SpaceX are among the companies pouring money into AI infrastructure. S&P estimates the six could collectively spend more than $7 trillion on AI-related capital expenditures between 2025 and 2030, with negative free cash flow expected to persist through at least next year.

The risk isn’t simply the size of the spending. Complex financing arrangements involving data centers and smaller AI firms can make it harder to see where the liabilities ultimately sit. If AI revenue disappoints, those commitments could become a much bigger burden.

S&P says it doesn’t currently see a need to change its ratings, but the warning comes as investors scrutinize borrowing costs and demand clearer proof that AI investments will generate sustainable returns.
