DeFi Real Yield vs. Inflationary Yield: Know What You're Actually Earning

One of the most important distinctions in DeFi is being overlooked by most retail participants: the difference between real yield and inflationary yield.

Inflationary yield is emissions-driven. Protocols print their native token and distribute it as APR. The number looks attractive — sometimes 50%, 100%, even higher — but the yield is constantly diluting existing holders. You're not earning revenue; you're receiving newly minted supply. Net returns often approach zero or go negative once you account for token depreciation.

Real yield is different. It comes from actual protocol revenue — trading fees, liquidation proceeds, interest spreads, lending margins — distributed to stakers or LPs in established assets. This is sustainable. The protocol is genuinely generating cash flows.

How to spot the difference:
→ Check where yield originates: token emissions or fee revenue?
→ Look at protocol revenue dashboards, not just APR figures
→ Assess token inflation rate vs. APR — if inflation exceeds APR, you're losing real value
→ Prioritize protocols where TVL growth correlates with revenue growth

$ETH L2 ecosystems are generating fee revenue at scale. $BNB DeFi protocols are building sustainable yield structures. $SOL -based DEXs are maturing their real-yield layer. The protocols that survive the next bear cycle will be the ones where yield is earned, not printed.

Chase real yield. Ignore the inflationary noise.
