Bitcoin UTXO age distribution — the breakdown of how long each coin has been dormant — is one of the cleanest on-chain signals for identifying where we are in a market cycle. When a large cohort of long-dormant UTXOs (held 1–2+ years) begins moving, it marks a structural shift: long-term holders are distributing into strength.
Historically, the transition from accumulation to distribution phases becomes visible in this data weeks before price peaks confirm it. When the 1Y–2Y age band starts shrinking as a percentage of supply, it tells you that hands that survived the bear market are now satisfied with current prices — and beginning to exit.
The inverse is equally powerful. After a capitulation event, watch for the 3-month UTXO band to contract sharply (coins moving in distress) and then flatten. That flattening is the base of accumulation.
