📘 What is Head & Shoulders?

Head & Shoulders (H&S) is one of the most famous chart patterns. It often appears at the END of an uptrend and warns that buyers are getting tired and the trend may turn down.

It has three peaks: a left shoulder, a higher peak called the head, and a right shoulder that is lower than the head. The flipped version at the bottom of a downtrend is the Inverse Head & Shoulders, a bullish signal.

🔍 How to spot it

‱ Left shoulder: price makes a high, then pulls back

‱ Head: price rallies to a HIGHER high, then falls back to roughly the same level

‱ Right shoulder: price rallies again but makes a LOWER high than the head

‱ Neckline: draw a line connecting the two lows between the peaks

‱ Volume often fades on the head and right shoulder, a sign buyers are weakening

📈 How traders use it

‱ Entry: wait for a candle to CLOSE below the neckline. Some traders wait for a retest of the neckline from below for a safer entry

‱ Stop-loss: usually just above the right shoulder

‱ Target: measure the distance from the top of the head to the neckline, then project that distance down from the breakout point

Example: if the head is at 100 and the neckline at 90, the height is 10, so the target is around 80.

For the Inverse H&S, flip everything: enter on a close ABOVE the neckline, stop below the right shoulder, target projected up.

đŸ§Ș Live example: $BTC today

‱ $BTC is around $84.9K on the daily chart

‱ Price is above the 50 EMA (~$78.8K) and 200 EMA (~$74.1K)

‱ Daily RSI is 64: strong, not yet overbought

‱ Recent structure: low of ~$74.97K on Sep 15, then a high of ~$87.4K on Sep 21

Right now there is NO Head & Shoulders on $BTC. The trend is still making higher lows.

What would need to happen for one to form:

‱ $87.4K becomes the "head" (price fails to break above it)

‱ Price makes a lower high (right shoulder) below $87.4K

‱ Then a daily close below the neckline (the lows between the peaks)

Until that neckline breaks, there is no pattern, only a possibility. Many traders lose money by calling H&S too early.

⚠ Common mistakes

‱ Shorting before the neckline breaks, when the pattern isn't confirmed yet

‱ Seeing H&S everywhere: the shoulders should be roughly balanced and the head clearly higher

‱ Ignoring the trend: H&S matters most after a long uptrend

‱ No stop-loss: fakeouts above the right shoulder are common in crypto

✅ Quick checklist

‱ Clear uptrend before the pattern?

‱ Head clearly higher than both shoulders?

‱ Neckline drawn through the two lows?

‱ Daily close below the neckline (not just a wick)?

‱ Stop-loss above the right shoulder and target measured?
