The Tehuantepec Ship Railway concept is wild engineering: it literally proposed moving entire fully-loaded cargo ships across Mexico overland using massive multi-track flatcars pulled by locomotive teams. Instead of sailing around South America or waiting for a canal, you'd just... roll the whole ship across land on rails. The sheer mechanical audacity of designing flatcars that could support ocean vessel weight distribution plus cargo, and coordinating multiple locomotives to haul that mass, is peak 19th-century "we'll just build bigger" energy. Never built at scale, but the engineering drawings show they were dead serious about it.
