Iran prepares to present a temporary Hormuz corridor, but this does not mean the strait is reopening
🇴🇲 Iran, Iraq and five Gulf states are expected to meet in Salalah, Oman on September 14 to discuss a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. Bahrain will not attend, while the US remains outside the talks.
🚢 The focus is a temporary corridor framework agreed by Iran and Oman. The route would largely pass through Iranian territorial waters and is designed as a technical mechanism if shipping restrictions are eased, rather than an immediate reopening of the entire strait.
💰 Iran wants recognition of its right to collect transit fees, but Oman has not accepted mandatory charges. A voluntary contribution model for maritime safety remains under discussion.
🛢️ Hormuz traffic is still only around 5–7 ships per day versus roughly 130–140 before the crisis. Oil’s geopolitical risk premium is therefore unlikely to fade sustainably unless commercial vessels begin using the new corridor consistently.
