Have you ever wondered why you see “0x” everywhere in crypto profiles and wallet addresses?
I started wondering about it recently.
I was trying to get all my handles to match across my socials and, while looking at other crypto creators, I started noticing a pattern:
0x was everywhere.
So I did a little research to understand what it actually meant.
Turns out, it’s not an Ethereum invention or just Web3 aesthetics.
“0x” is a programming prefix, popularized by languages like C, used to tell a computer that what follows is written in hexadecimal (base 16).
That’s why Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain and other EVM networks use addresses in this format:
0x + 40 hexadecimal characters
⚠️ But I found a couple of details that I thought were worth sharing:
Not every letter exists: hexadecimal only uses 0-9 and A-F. If a supposed wallet address contains a G, X or Z, something is wrong.
Capital letters can be a checksum: when an address mixes uppercase and lowercase, like 0x1aB2..., it may be using EIP-55. This helps detect typing or copy errors.
⚠️ Important: a checksum does not mean an address is safe. A malicious address can still be perfectly valid.
After all that research, I ended up adopting:
0xFTBR 🐰
I guess that’s how new rabbit holes begin.
