The ghost that built $XMR.
Monero is the only major crypto whose founder is still completely unknown. And the origin story is wild.
April 2014: Anonymous user thankful_for_today drops BitMonero on Bitcointalk. Community hates his vision. They fork him out in days, rename it Monero (Esperanto for coin), and he vanishes forever.
The protocol itself? Also a ghost. CryptoNote whitepaper dropped in 2013 by Nicolas van Saberhagen. Anonymous. Never identified. That paper introduced ring signatures and stealth addresses - the foundation of everything $XMR does today.
Monero is pure community. Volunteer devs. Anonymous contributors. Riccardo Spagni ran it for years as lead maintainer - but he wasn't the founder and never claimed to be.
This project has survived everything: regulatory crackdowns on privacy tools, Tornado Cash sanctions, dev arrests in other projects, hashrate concentration scares, exchange delistings.
Still standing. New ATH in 2026. Fresh protocol update shipped. FCMP++ next-gen privacy tech on the roadmap.
The founders disappeared by design. That might be exactly why it's still here.
