Nvidia ($NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang once described himself as a mischievous and restless child who was constantly taking things apart, building things and getting into trouble.

In a 2014 interview with a 14-year-old student, Huang joked that he was not exactly a model kid. “I wasn’t a particularly good kid. I just turned out good,” he said.

Huang recalled setting things on fire, gluing objects together, blowing things up, digging holes and experimenting with whatever he could find. Much of that behavior reflected an early curiosity about how things worked.

Despite the mischief, Huang said he cared deeply about his grades. Mathematics was one of his favorite subjects and became an important foundation for his future career.

He eventually gravitated toward engineering because it combined analytical thinking with his desire to build and create. Huang said engineering was ideal for someone who enjoyed math and wanted to make things the world had never seen.

He did not necessarily have his exact career mapped out at 14, but he already knew he wanted to pursue fields involving mathematics, science and problem-solving.

Huang went on to co-found Nvidia in 1993 and has remained its CEO and president ever since. Under his leadership, the company expanded far beyond its gaming roots.

Nvidia’s GPUs eventually became critical infrastructure for artificial intelligence, helping push the company’s market value above $5 trillion and making Huang one of the world’s wealthiest people. His childhood curiosity ultimately became a defining part of the engineering mindset behind Nvidia.
