"Nine," he typed, like the number explained everything on its own. "We've done this eight times already, come on."

We had. Eight trades over about three months, nothing over 6 million VND any single time, every one of them clean, badge intact, his completion rate climbing right alongside mine.

This one was different. 45 million VND, almost ten times anything we'd done before, and he wanted the release before I'd finished checking the transfer.

"You know me by now."

I did know him. That was the strange part, trust here wasn't a guess, it was actual data, eight real data points, all good. For about four seconds, that felt like reason enough to skip the ninth check.

Then I did the math differently: eight clean trades at low stakes cost him almost nothing to build, and bought exactly one moment where a stranger's badge wouldn't have been enough but a familiar one might be. A track record isn't proof for the trade it's being spent on.

It's proof for the trades that already happened.

I checked anyway.

Money was there, matched, clean. He'd been honest, that time.

But that time isn't every time, and I'd come within half a second of letting nine trades of history stand in for the one check that was actually mine to make on trade number nine.
