Ukraine has launched one of its largest reported aerial attacks against Russia, with hundreds of drones targeting areas across the country, including the Moscow region. Russian authorities said their air defenses intercepted 822 Ukrainian drones nationwide, including around 600 directed toward Moscow, while regional officials reported deaths, injuries and damage.
The Moscow region saw particularly heavy activity. A warehouse belonging to Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries near Podolsk caught fire, while authorities reported that an 83-year-old man was killed and several other people were injured in the wider region. The scale of the attack makes it one of the most significant Ukrainian strikes on the Moscow area since the war began.
The escalation was not limited to the Moscow region. Russian authorities also reported casualties and infrastructure damage in the Rostov region. Ukraine has increasingly attempted to strike targets deep inside Russia, seeking to place pressure on infrastructure and logistics that Kyiv says support Moscow's war effort.
At the same time, Russia continued its own attacks across Ukraine. Russian missile and drone strikes hit several Ukrainian cities, with casualties reported in Kryvyi Rih and other locations. A Russian strike also damaged Kyiv's Pochaina book market, while industrial infrastructure was hit elsewhere.
A Dangerous New Phase
The latest attacks underline how the conflict is increasingly becoming a long-range battle in which both sides are attempting to damage critical infrastructure far beyond the immediate front lines. Ukraine's expanding ability to conduct deep strikes against Russian territory is putting additional pressure on Moscow, while Russia continues large-scale missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The situation remains highly volatile. Today's escalation does not by itself indicate an imminent change in the overall course of the war, but the growing scale and geographic reach of attacks raise the risk of further retaliation and broader regional consequences.
