Venmo used to make every payment public by default; anyone could see who paid whom, for what. People hated it once coworkers and exes started watching. That's basically how every public blockchain works today, except it's not pizza money, it's every wallet balance and every contract call, sitting in public forever for competitors to read like a billboard. That's why serious institutional money still avoids it.

DuskEVM's answers with Hedger, and it is more interesting than "just encrypt it." Encrypting a number and hiding it is easy; banks already do that off-chain. The hard part is running a smart contract on that number while it's still encrypted, and proving the result is correct without anyone ever seeing the plaintext. That's homomorphic encryption plus zero-knowledge proofs working together, and it means a lending contract can confirm your collateral is healthy without your collateral amount ever touching public view.

But this exact idea has been the holy grail of cryptography for over a decade, and projects like Zama and Fhenix have chased it without a full production-scale rollout yet. Computing on encrypted data is brutally expensive. So when I hear "confidential EVM," my honest expectation isn't a fully generalized private Ethereum on day one; it's narrow, high-value use cases first: private lending books, private settlement, maybe tokenized bonds. That's not a knock. That's just how hard cryptography actually gets adopted.

If Dusk actually pulls off even the narrow version, the implication is bigger than one product. It means institutions could finally settle real trades on public infrastructure without broadcasting their strategy to every wallet watching the mempool. That's the one blocker that's kept serious capital sitting on private rails this entire time.

The billboard doesn't disappear here. It gets replaced with a wall, and only the right key gets to see through it. Whether that wall holds up at real scale will be decided by gas costs and live deployments, not by how elegant the whitepaper sounds.
