Temporary Soft Fork attempt begins!
Authored by Dathon Ohm and assigned in Dec 2025, this is a 1-year temporary soft fork to restrict arbitrary data/inscriptions and preserve blockspace for financial txs.
HOW IT ACTIVATES (Different from past forks):
- Needs 55% of blocks in ONE difficulty period: 1,109 of 2,016 blocks
- If that fails, mandatory signaling starts at Block 961,632 anyway, expected early August 2026, guaranteeing lock-in with enforcement ∼2 weeks after
- If 55% not met before 961632, nodes will treat non-signaling blocks as invalid to force lock-in by 963648 and activate by 965664
- It uses UASF - nodes enforce rule whether miners agree or not, with 55% threshold vs traditional 95%
CURRENT STATUS:
- 583 out of 24,481 nodes running BIP-110, primary implementation is Bitcoin Knots
- Deployed for 1 year with possible extension
CONTROVERSY:
- Michael Saylor urges to REJECT in 110-point essay as August showdown approaches
- Adam Back warns it could split Bitcoin into minority fork
