Bitcoin is facing another serious consensus battle, and this one is not really about price.
BIP-110 proposes a temporary soft fork that would restrict how much arbitrary, non-financial data can be pushed into Bitcoin transactions. Supporters argue that Bitcoin should prioritize being money, not become a permanent data-storage layer for inscriptions, Ordinals, tokens, and other payloads.
Critics see it differently.
For them, the bigger issue is who gets to decide what is considered “acceptable” use of Bitcoin’s block space. If a transaction follows the existing consensus rules and pays the required fees, should a new rule be able to reject it?
That is where the debate gets serious.
BIP-110 uses a user-activated mechanism with a 55% miner-signaling threshold, but miner support has remained extremely low. That creates an unusual situation: a proposal can have plenty of discussion online while having very little actual network adoption.
And that is why this is bigger than a simple Bitcoin upgrade.
A fork is ultimately a coordination game.
Miners, node operators, exchanges, developers, businesses, and users all have to decide which rules they are willing to follow. If enough participants disagree, Bitcoin doesn't simply “vote” and move on. Different groups can end up following different chains.
The real question isn't just:
“Is BIP-110 good or bad?”
It is:
“Who should have the power to define Bitcoin’s rules?”
Bitcoin was designed around decentralized consensus.
