New Zealand unemployment reaches its highest level in over a decade, adding pressure on the NZD

📉 New Zealand’s unemployment rate rose to 5.6% in Q2 2026, above the 5.4% forecast and the highest level recorded since late 2015.

📊 Employment still increased by 0.5%, but the labour force participation rate climbed to 70.7%, indicating that labour supply expanded faster than the economy’s ability to absorb new workers. The underutilisation rate also rose from 12.9% to 13.8%.

💵 Annual wage growth slowed to 2.0%, reflecting relatively weak domestic wage pressure and reinforcing the view that the labour market remains soft.

🏦 The data pushed the NZD down by around 0.2% and lowered two-year swap rates. Markets still expect the RBNZ may raise interest rates, but the latest report increases the likelihood of a more cautious policy approach in the coming meetings.
