Japan’s Inflation Edges Higher, Giving the BOJ More Time

📊 Japan’s core CPI rose 1.6% year-on-year in June, matching forecasts and accelerating from 1.4% in May. However, inflation remained below the BOJ’s 2% target for a fifth consecutive month.

🔍 Core-core CPI, which excludes both fresh food and energy, eased from 1.8% to 1.7%, suggesting underlying price pressures have yet to strengthen significantly.

🏦 Many investors therefore expect the BOJ to keep interest rates unchanged at its July 30–31 meeting, although policymakers may adopt a firmer tone on inflation risks.

⚠️ The yen near 163, elevated oil prices and a 7.1% rise in producer prices could intensify pressure in the second half of the year. If energy costs remain high, core inflation may approach 1.8–2.0% in the third quarter.

💴 The data is neutral to slightly hawkish, supporting the view that an immediate rate hike is unlikely while limiting the BOJ’s ability to remain highly accommodative for long.
