It's exciting.
It's also slightly terrifying when I think it through.
An autonomous agent is fast, tireless, and literal.
It will do exactly what it's told.
Including the catastrophic thing, at machine speed, before anyone notices.
A human fat-fingering a trade is one mistake.
An agent looping a bad instruction is a thousand mistakes a second.
So here's the question I keep landing on.
If agents act without us, what stops them when they're wrong?
"We'll monitor them" is the same old answer that's always too late.
This is where @NewtonProtocol looks less like DeFi plumbing and more like necessary infrastructure.
An authorization layer doesn't care whether a human or an agent submitted the transaction.
It checks the action against a policy before it settles.
An agent can propose anything.
It can only execute what passes.
That's a guardrail that works at machine speed, because it's in the path — not watching from the side.
My skeptic's note.
The policy still has to anticipate what "wrong" looks like.
A guardrail only catches what its rules describe.
And bounding an agent is only as good as whoever set the bounds.
But the direction is unavoidable.
Autonomy without enforceable limits isn't innovation.
It's just a faster way to lose money.
