📘 What are Bollinger Bands?
Bollinger Bands are 3 lines around price. The middle line is the 20-period simple moving average. The upper and lower bands sit 2 standard deviations above and below it.
When price swings a lot, the bands spread wide. When price goes quiet, the bands pinch together. That pinch is called the squeeze, and it is the most useful signal the bands give.

🔍 How to read them
• Band width = (upper - lower) / middle. Low width = calm market
• Squeeze: band width drops to one of its lowest readings in months
• Expansion: the bands open fast after a squeeze. Volatility is back
• Walking the band: in a strong trend, price can hug the upper (or lower) band for days
• Touching a band is NOT a signal on its own. It only means price is far from its average
🔍 How to spot a squeeze
• Look at the daily or 4H chart, not 5m
• Compare today's band width with the last 3-6 months
• Mark the range high and low inside the squeeze
• Wait for a candle to CLOSE outside the bands, with volume above average
📈 How traders use it
• Entry: a daily close outside the band after a squeeze, in the direction of the break. Some wait for a retest of the range edge
• Stop-loss: back inside the range, usually beyond the middle band or the range's other side
• Target: the next key level, or the height of the range added to the breakout point. Aim for at least 2x your risk
• Exit hint: when price closes back inside the bands and the bands stop widening, the move is losing power
🧪 Live example: $BTC daily
• Aug 15: band width hit 4.2%, the lowest of the last 120 days. BTC sat near $63K
• Aug 18 to Aug 21: BTC broke out and closed at $78,340, +21% in 3 days. Band width then exploded to 39.9% by Aug 29
• Sep 9: another squeeze (5.5%). The break came on Sep 18-21: BTC closed at $86,620 on Sep 21, above the upper band
• Now: band width is 5.4%, the tightest since Aug 18
• Bands now: upper ~$86,334, middle ~$84,077, lower ~$81,819. BTC ~$82,460 sits under the middle band. Daily RSI 49
• On the 4H chart the width is just 2.3%
• Options traders see the same calm: TokenPost reports near-term BTC implied volatility near a 5-year low
• What would trigger it: a daily close above ~$86.3K (bullish) or below ~$81.8K (bearish). The Oct 8 low at $80,393 is the next floor
⚠️ Common mistakes
• Selling every touch of the upper band in an uptrend
• Guessing the direction before the squeeze breaks
• Trading the first wick outside the band instead of the close
• Ignoring volume. A breakout on weak volume often fails

• Is band width near its lowest in months?
• Did a candle close outside the band, not just wick?
• Is volume above average on the breakout?
• Where is your stop: back inside the range?
• Is your risk 1-2% of your account?
