PayPal, one of the largest electronic payments companies in the world, has recently revealed that it is holding almost $1 billion worth of cryptocurrencies on behalf of its customers. According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), PayPal reported that it is "safeguarding" $943 million in crypto assets as of March 31, 2023. The majority of these assets are bitcoin and ether, which account for $499 million and $362 million respectively.

The company, which also owns Venmo, started offering the option to buy, sell and hold cryptocurrencies on its platform in October 2022.

🟢Former FTX CEO SBF Aims to Get Most of Charges Dismissed

The former head of FTX, a global cryptocurrency exchange, is facing a dozen criminal charges in the US for allegedly defrauding customers, investors, lenders, and the government. Sam Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, was arrested in the Bahamas in December and is trying to dismiss most of the charges on technical grounds.

SBF is accused of misappropriating billions of dollars of customer funds deposited with FTX and using them for his own benefit and for his crypto hedge fund Alameda Research. He is also charged with securities fraud, money laundering, bank fraud, and campaign finance violations for trying to influence US politicians with illegal donations.

🔴Ex-Coinbase Manager Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Insider Trading

Ex-Coinbase product manager Ishan Wahi has officially been sentenced to two years in prison for insider trading. Moreover, Wahi has been sentenced to what is viewed as the first insider trading case in the history of cryptocurrency.

US District Judge Loretta Preska sentenced Wahi in a Manhattan federal court on Tuesday. Additionally, Wahi pleaded guilty in February to two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The court proceedings are one of two high-profile crypto-related cases in New York, following the FTX collapse and the prosecution against founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

🔴Kenya Mulls 3% Tax on Crypto (Report)

As reported by Bloomberg, Kenya’s lawmakers might implement a 3% tax on the transfer or exchange of cryptocurrencies, whereas a 15% levy could affect creators of monetized online content. 

The proposal is part of a newly-designed bill that could stabilize the financial condition of the African nation. President William Ruto aims to double tax collections to 5 trillion shillings (around $37 billion) in five years and use the funds to promote monetary growth.

The legislation will become official from the beginning of July should the Kenyan lawmakers give their nod. The country estimates revenue of approximately $21 billion during the first 365 days (14% more than the anticipated collections for the ongoing fiscal year).

🔴 Voyager Digital Will Liquidate After Failing to Find Buyer

Voyager Digital, a crypto broker that went bankrupt last year, has given up on finding a buyer and decided to liquidate its assets and wind down its business. The company had previously tried to sell itself to FTX US and Binance US, but both deals fell through due to regulatory hurdles and other issues.

According to a filing on Friday, Voyager customers will be able to recover only 36% of their crypto holdings, which is much lower than the 72-73% they would have received if the Binance US deal had gone ahead.

Voyager will allow customers to withdraw their funds directly if they have any of the 67 supported tokens, such as Bitcoin and Ether.

🔴 Bitcoin Falls 5%, Pepecoin 50% Ahead of CPI Report

The cryptocurrency market experienced a sharp decline on Monday, with Bitcoin (BTC) dropping below $27,500 for the first time since January. The leading digital asset was trading at around $27,350 at press time, down more than 5.5% in the past 24 hours.
