​1. The Coin: Ether (ETH)


​The native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum platform is called Ether (ETH).



​Market Position: ETH is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, trailing only Bitcoin.
​Utility (Gas): Ether serves an essential functional role on the network. It is used to pay for gas fees, which are the computational costs required to execute transactions and smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Gas fees fluctuate based on network demand.
​Creation: New ETH is created when owners validate transactions on the network, a process currently based on the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.

​Shift to Proof-of-Stake (PoS): Ethereum moved from the energy-intensive Proof-of-Work (PoW) system (like Bitcoin) to a much more energy-efficient Proof-of-Stake (PoS) system.
​Staking: Under PoS, transaction validation is done by participants who "stake" or lock up their ETH. This makes the network more secure and reduces its energy consumption by over 99%.

​Founding: Ethereum was first described in a 2013 whitepaper by programmer Vitalik Buterin.
​Launch: The Ethereum Foundation officially launched the blockchain on July 30, 2015.
​Goal: The project’s central mission is to become a global platform for decentralized applications, allowing users to write and run software that is resistant to censorship, downtime, and fraud.
