While Bitcoin lost $80K and the whole market bled red this week, something strange happened in DeFi.
Kraken's parent company just bought $AAVE — the very same week a whale dumped $25.5M of it onto exchanges.
One of them is wrong.
THE BUY
On 5 November, Payward — the parent of Kraken — announced it and its asset-management clients bought $AAVE on the secondary market. The amount is undisclosed, and Payward says it may buy more. No equity stake — just tokens, and a partnership to bring onchain lending to a wider audience.
Aave founder Stani Kulechov confirmed it, tying it to the "Aave Will Win" framework — directing protocol value back to the DAO and $AAVE holders.
That's one of crypto's biggest exchanges buying into DeFi's biggest lender.
THE DUMP
Now the other side. Over the ten days to 3 November, a single whale deposited 184,203 AAVE — about $25.5M — onto multiple exchanges. AAVE dropped ~6% on 3 November alone. A hacked-exchange wallet has also been selling stolen AAVE for ETH.
So the tape says fear. The institutions say conviction. Who's right?
THE PROTOCOL DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE PRICE
Here's what makes this fight interesting: the protocol underneath is still DeFi's biggest machine. Aave holds ~$16.2B in TVL — still the #1 lending protocol — with ~$33B in net deposits and ~$11B in active loans. It pulled in ~$39.4M in fees in the last 30 days.
When Aave flash-crashed 64% in a day in October 2025, the protocol processed the chaos without failing. When the Binance hack exploiter borrowed $44.6M against stolen USDT on Aave two weeks ago, it froze the risk, liquidated about half the position, and kept running. Aave has processed billions in liquidations across hundreds of thousands of events — and it has never gone down.
THE CHART
$AAVE trades around $130 right now — down ~2% today, but up roughly 7–10% over the past week while Bitcoin is down on the week. That's relative strength in a fear market.
Watch $133, the 24-hour high. A clean break above it opens the door toward $139 — the level analyst Ali Martinez flagged after a TD Sequential buy signal on 4 November, with $146 as his first target. Lose $122, the 24-hour low, and the weak hands get their answer first.
And keep one eye on $ETH: if Ethereum rolls over into tonight's US payrolls report, Aave follows.
THE HONEST RISKS
TVL is down ~17% in 30 days. The token buybacks that once supported $AAVE have been paused since April. Morpho is gaining share and paying better yields. And that exploiter loan is still live — ~9,885 WETH owed against ~$35.6M in USDT, health factor just 1.24.
This is a contested token, not a victory lap.
WHAT TO WATCH
Tonight's payrolls print at 18:30 PKT decides the macro mood. Then watch $AAVE against $133 and $122 — and $LINK for the wider DeFi bid. That range tells you who won: the whale, or Kraken's parent.
Check the $AAVE chart: are you buying the fear, or selling into it?
Not financial advice. DYOR.
