Whales buying the dip is a good story. The harder question is whether it's a signal.

One analyst argues Ethereum is repeating a January pattern. Huobi ETH open interest dropped sharply, price fell nearly 50%, and Coinbase whales were selling into it. The difference now, they say, is that Coinbase whales are buying as the decline begins, which could make this the final leg down instead of the start of another long one.

The broader theme has support. CryptoQuant says wallets holding 10,000 to 100,000 ETH kept buying through the bear market, lifting their combined holdings to a record 19.6M ETH. Whale wallets were also buying as ETH slipped below $2,400. Big holders accumulating when fear is high is a familiar late-cycle behavior.

But the pattern rests on one earlier episode, and one match is hard to test. Whale labels are also slippery. Wallets holding 1,000 to 10,000 ETH cut their balances from about 15.6M to 12.9M ETH since January, so "whales" aren't one crowd with one view. And dollar open interest drops whenever price drops. Binance ETH open interest fell by more than half in dollars but is roughly unchanged in ETH, so part of a "big drop" can be a price effect.

The psychology matters too. After months of pain, traders want a sign the worst is over, and whale-watching feels like insider knowledge. Whales can be early, wrong, or hedged.
The risk is that large wallets keep buying while price keeps falling, and CryptoQuant itself said the bottom may not be in yet. The bullish possibility is that accumulation during weakness has often come before recoveries, so continued buying while price stabilizes would strengthen the case.

Whale buying tells you what big wallets did. It doesn't tell you what price does next.
