AI agents are starting to get better tools for managing their own payments.

Ripple's latest XRPL AI Starter Kit update allows agents to use the XRP Ledger for payments, meaning they can pay for services like data or computing power using $XRP or RLUSD. With $XRP payment channels, an agent can also make many small payments during a session without every single one needing to be recorded on-chain.

What I find more interesting, though, is what happens right before an agent makes a payment.

Imagine an agent finds some data, gets a price, and is ready to pay. How can it be sure the data is legitimate? Or that the invoice is from the correct source? And how does the seller know this agent is actually authorized to spend the funds?

A wallet can manage the transaction itself, but it can't guarantee the trustworthiness of the information leading up to that payment.

This is where a verification layer like Verona.dev could become relevant. Give the agent a verifiable fact about what it's purchasing or what it's permitted to do, and then let the payment infrastructure handle the rest.

This could be what machine-to-machine commerce eventually looks like. One system handles verification, another manages permissions, and another moves the money. Much of it happens almost instantly, without anyone ever seeing a checkout screen.
