Brent Oil Breaks Above $90 as U.S.–Iran Tensions Escalate

Brent crude has climbed back above $90 per barrel after renewed military action between the United States and Iran near the Strait of Hormuz. Brent reached around $90.6 in early trading as markets priced in a higher risk of supply disruption.

The U.S. said its strikes targeted Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island that were preparing to deploy sea mines in the waterway. Iran subsequently retaliated with missile attacks on U.S. positions in Jordan, adding to concerns that the conflict could escalate further.

🛢️ Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters

Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy chokepoints. Before the current conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil supply moved through the strait.

Shipping activity has already fallen significantly as companies reassess the risks of operating in the area.

Any sustained disruption could therefore create a meaningful supply shock and keep a geopolitical premium embedded in crude prices.

📈 What Happens If Oil Stays Above $90?

A temporary spike in crude doesn't necessarily mean a lasting inflation shock.

But if oil remains elevated for several weeks, markets could start reassessing the inflation outlook. Higher energy costs can feed into transportation, manufacturing and consumer prices.

That could make central banks more cautious about cutting interest rates.

📊 Stocks and Crypto Are Also in Focus

Energy producers could benefit from higher crude prices, while airlines, transport companies and other fuel-sensitive businesses could face higher costs.

For crypto traders, the bigger concern is the potential macro chain reaction:

Oil ↑ → Inflation expectations ↑ → Rate-cut expectations ↓ → Yields ↑ → Risk assets pressured

Bitcoin could therefore face short-term volatility if oil continues climbing and financial conditions tighten.

At the same time, prolonged geopolitical instability could strengthen the narrative around Bitcoin as an alternative, decentralized asset.

👀 What Traders Should Watch

The next few sessions will be important.

Watch:

  • Brent crude around $90

  • Strait of Hormuz shipping activity

  • U.S. Treasury yields

  • Inflation expectations

  • U.S. dollar strength

  • Bitcoin's reaction to broader risk-off moves

The key question isn't simply whether oil touched $90.

It's whether the geopolitical risk premium stays in the price.
