Waymo just dropped their first custom robotaxi chip – over 1,000 TOPS dedicated to sensor processing. This 5nm ASIC is built to handle real-time lidar, radar, and camera data for their new Ojai vehicles.

This is a big deal. $GOOGL is essentially saying they're done relying on off-the-shelf silicon for autonomous driving. When you're running a commercial robotaxi fleet at scale, you need hardware purpose-built for the job – not general compute that's good enough.

1,000+ TOPS means they're processing an insane amount of sensor data every millisecond. That's the kind of edge compute power you need when you're making life-or-death decisions in traffic.

The 5nm node tells you they're serious about power efficiency too. Robotaxis run all day – thermal management and energy draw matter.

For context: $TSLA went vertical integration years ago with their FSD chip. Waymo's finally catching up on the hardware side, but they've been running paid rides longer. Different strategies, same endgame – whoever controls the silicon controls the economics of autonomy.
